Comparing the 5 Current Casita Trailer Models

Casita trailers are popular for those seeking a compact and efficient way to travel and camp. With five current models to choose from, each offers its own unique features and benefits. But what are the different Casita trailer models?

Currently, Casita offers five main models: the Spirit, the Independence, the Freedom, the Liberty, and the Heritage. You can order each of these models with or without a wet bath. All models are 17′ long and feature a dinette and a kitchen with a sink, stove, and refrigerator.

Casita Travel Trailers are similar in many ways. In this article, we’ll discuss the different floor plans so that you can find one that suits your needs.

If you have more general questions about the Casita Travel trailer, read my article.

Spirit

The Spirit has a dining area that is separate from the bed. The advantage of not changing the bed into a dining area daily is that it saves time and effort in setting up and breaking down the space, leading to a more relaxed and convenient camping experience.

Like all Casitas, there is a fair amount of modification to the bed that you can do. In the video below, the owner modified this trailer to have two twin-sized beds.

Unlike the Freedom, which we’ll discuss later, the Spirit has stationary chairs. The advantage to this setup is that the dinette converts into a second bed that is 24″ wide by 72″ long. It will fit a child or a smaller adult.

The main bed is an east-west configuration. This means you are sleeping with your head toward the trailer’s wall rather than the trailer’s rear.

The disadvantage is that if you are sleeping with someone, one person will have to climb over the other to get out of bed. The bed is 54″ wide by 76″ long on the longest edge.

So if you are tall, you’ll want to sleep on the outside ofthe bed. The inside of the bed is slightly shorter because of the curve in the wall. Realistically, if you are taller than 6 ‘2″, you won’t sleep that comfortably. In this case, Independence, which we’ll discuss next, is the better option.

If you forgo the bathroom, you’ll get bunk beds. The weight limit on the top bunk is 100 lbs. The dimensions of the bunks are 24″ by 75″ each. Frankly, they are more suited for children.

Still, this is an excellent option if you have children, as this increases the number of people who can sleep in the Casita to five.

There is storage space underneath the seats of the dinette.

In the Spirit, the kitchen is on the passenger-side or entry-side wall. The kitchen of the Spirt has a two-burner stove, a small sink, a faucet, and a four cubic foot refrigerator with a small freezer.

Above the refrigerator is a space for either a microwave or storage. However, the microwave is an option at an additional cost.

Like all travel trailers, Casitas have a vent fan above the sink. There is also a roof vent in the center of the trailer. If you buy the Deluxe model with the bathroom, you’ll get a roof vent fan in there as well.

There is a fair-sized cabinet under the sink. If you choose the Deluxe model, with the bathroom, you’ll also get a wardrobe next to the bathroom.

When the bed is converted into a dinette, it snuggly seats up to six people.

Independence

The Independence is ideal if you don’t want a climb-over bed or you want a separate sleeping area for you and your traveling partner. This is the model that we own, and we bought it because we were tired of climbing over each other at night.

It has twin beds that are 30.5″ wide by 82″ tall. This makes it the best option for taller people. But keep in mind that the interior height of the trailer (at the tallest) is 6′ 2″. And the shower is a bit shorter because of the curve in the front of the trailer. Still, this IS the preferred model of taller people.

Casita Independence – Twin Bed

During the day, this area also serves as the dining area with the addition of a removable table. It’s not the most comfortable dining area since the back cushions are too far away from your back to offer much support. Frankly, we don’t mind and find it a good trade.

If you don’t prefer the twin beds, the bed area can be configured into a king-sized, scooch-down bed. This is great if you like to eat outside or don’t mind switching the bed to a dinette in the morning. It’s a good option for taller and larger people.

In our Casita, the TV is mounted in the rear of the trailer. We have our pillows on the bed toward the trailer’s front end. That way, we can watch TV in bed.

The kitchen is on the driver’s side in the trailer’s center. The Independence is one of two models that have a 3-burner stove. The kitchen is larger in the Independence, so there is more storage space.

If you like to cook, you’ll appreciate having the extra burner. There is a vent fan about the stove. There is a small sink and faucet. The refrigerator is on the opposite side of the kitchen and is a four cubic-foot refrigerator with a small freezer.

There are three drawers under the stove. Below the sink is a small pull-out drawer where I keep the sponges and a small bottle of dish soap. The heater is located under the pull-out drawer.

In addition, there is another slim cabinet over the sink. I’ve seen people use it as a spice cabinet. I have a spice rack in there, but I use it for medications and other items.

Every once in a while, I get asked if Casitas have an oven. The fact is, you can’t even order a Casita with an oven. It’s just not offered.

Like the other models, you’ll get bunk beds if you forgo the bathroom. And, if you get the bunk beds, you won’t get the wardrobe cabinet.

Freedom

The Freedom, like the Spirit, has a separate dining area. However, instead of having stationary seats, the Freedom has swivel seats. I think people have a love-hate relationship with the swivel seats, as I see many people removing them to create different layouts.

Some People say that the swivel chairs aren’t that comfortable. And they remove the seats to create a bench making the trailer more like the Spirit floorplan. Often, the bench converts into an additional bed.

If you’re considering getting the Freedom, I would definitely spend some time trying out the seats before you buy one. The Spirit has storage underneath the dinette seats where the Freedom does not.

The floor plan in the Freedom is similar to the Spirit.

The bed in the Freedom is the same size as the bed in the Spirit, 54″ wide by 74″ long. It also is in the East-West configuration, where your head is toward the side wall of the trailer rather than the rear of the trailer.

This model also has a two-burner stove. The sink, faucet, and stove placement are the same as the Spirit. The refrigerator is on the same side as the rest of the kitchen, which is the passenger’s side of the trailer.

The upper cabinets in Casitas are all very similar. You may find a different cabinet configuration under the sink in the Casita models.

However, the cabinet configuration in the Spirit and Freedom are the same. You’ll get one drawer and two cabinets.

With all models, you’ll lose some cabinet space if you opt to have the heater installed.

I should mention that if you order the TV package from Casita, they will mount it in the rear of the trailer on the passenger’s side. That way, you can watch TV from bed if your pillows are on the driver’s side of the trailer. You can also see the TV from the front-most swivel seat since it faces the TV.

Liberty

The Liberty has the most versatile bed of all the Casita floor plans. It can be configured into a king, full, or twin-sized bed(s). If you decide to go with the twin beds as they come, as they measure 24″ wide x 80″ long.

This area is really more useful for a dinette. And, it’s a more comfortable dinette area than the Independence.

Our friends are in the process of enlarging the twin beds. I have seen some very clever hacks for this mod in the Casita Facebook groups.

If you set the bed up as a full-sized bed, you’ll have an East-West bed set up. Setting it up as a king or twins gives you a North-South configuration.

The Liberty is the other model of the Casita Trailer that has a larger kitchen with a three-burner stove. If fact, the kitchen is the same as the one in the Independence. The sink and stove are on the driver’s side, while the refrigerator is on the opposite wall.

Heritage

The Casita Heritage is the best model for families. If you forgo the wet bath on the Heritage, you’ll have room to sleep six!

Keep in mind that with this configuration, you’ll have two sets of bunk beds. The bunk beds located on the side of the trailer are 21″ x 74″, so pretty narrow.

The bunk beds on the front of the trailer, that replace the bathroom and wardrobe are 24″ x 75″. The weight limit for the top bunks is 100 pounds.

It’s a pretty tight fit with 4-6 of you inside, but people do make it work. Besides, didn’t you go camping so you could be outside?

The main bed is the standard 54″ x 75″ East-West bed.

The kitchen has a smaller two-burner stove. The refrigerator is on the same side as the sink and stove.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Casita offers a variety of models to fit your needs. All models are 17 feet long and have the same size refrigerator. With a Casita travel trailer, you can hit the road and enjoy all the comforts of home, no matter where your travels take you.
